The tonfa has played such a big part of weapon history in not only Okinawa but China and Thai land, it is also still being used today in some countries around the world, not only in dojos but as a part of police equipment! That says that it is a very effective weapon standing the test of time.
Research has found the origin of the tonfa can be traced to ancient China and Thailand where it was originally used as an accessory to a millstone. After being inserted into the millstone, the tonfa would be used to grind rice or beans. Eventually, the tonfa made its way to Okinawa for the same pur-pose of grinding rice & beans.
Since Okinawa had a strong martial culture, it is no surprise that the tonfa was added to the many other farm utensils that made the change into weap-ons of Japanese and Okinawan karate. This is because it can easily be in-corporated into traditional punching and blocking. In time, the handle of the tonfa was modified so that the club would rotate when twirled. This made its ability to strike, block & swing very unpredictable.
Tonfa are traditionally used in pairs, one in each hand. As the tonfa can be held in many different ways, when practicing the use of the tonfa it often in-volves learning how to switch between different grips at high speed and such techniques require great manual dexterity.

The Sai (Pronged Truncheon) is believed to have originated in Okinawan Japan with the pitchfork. Its shape can be described as a dagger shaped fork with two prongs that are usually curved and project out from the hilt of the weapon. Traditionally the Sai was used as an agricultural tool to measure crops, bale hay, to hold rolling carts or to plant rice. This disguise of the weapon made it very easy for farmers to be prepared for raids and ambushes. When used in combat, traditionally 3 Sai's were carried so that the first one could be thrown at an oppponent. It was used to stab, block, trap and punch. The advantage of the shape of the weapon made it easy to trap an opponent's weapon and disarm them. Even a weapon as large as a long sword can be disarmed. The Sai is a very versatile weapon and is probably best used by those who are agile.
The Sai today is used in conjuction with many different martial arts styles, often added into kata or forms for aesthetic flare. The tip of the weapon is dulled or blunt so as not to hurt an opponent.
The Sai can be found in today's popular culture, such as the comic book super-hero Elektra. She used a pair of Sai's as her weapon of choice. Other notable Sai advocates include Gabrielle (a character from Xena), Raphael the ninja turtle and Neo in the Matrix.

The Nunchaku is a modern day weapon derived from its farming roots. It consists of two handles made of wood (and in modern times, fibreglass, plastic or covered in foam) joined by a rope or metal chain.
The Nunchaku is a traditional Okinawan weapon that is believed to have originated from the Japanese island of Okinawa. Although, the Nunchaku has also been mentioned in ancient Chinese history as being two pieces of wood tied together by horse hair or a piece of straw.
The Nunchaku was used, along with the Bo and Sai, originally as farm tools. It is thought that farmers used the Nunchaku as a flail to separate the grain from the husk of rice and soy beans. During the 15th Century, King Sho Hashi, in order to prevent a revolt, declared that no one could carry a weapon. Villagers and citizens begun to use farm tools as weapons for protection and from this stemmed the practice of using a Nunchaku as a weapon.

The Bo is a 6 ft long staff usually made out of hard wood such as red or white oak and in some instances even bamboo. Different forms of the Bo staff have been used throughout Asia since the beginning of recorded history. The first Bo's were known as an Ishibo, and were made out of stone which made them unpractical and extremely heavy. The Kanabo was another relative of the Bo staff, these Kanabo's were made of wood studded with iron for extra strength but again were to heavy for actual combat so eventually were replaced by the regular hard wood Bo's which are still used today.
The Bo was used for self defence by commoners and monks (Religious warriors), used throughout the 15th century and into the 16th century as a defence against the steel of the more powerful samurai sword. This led the Bo into being a foundation of many martial arts styles. One of the first being Kobudo, a martial art using weapons which emerged in the early 17th century in Okinawa.
